HARMONISATION OF MAR | Harmonising and Improving Training in Communication and Safety at Sea

Summary
The background of this project is the need for better handling of emergency situations at sea. Technological change, new job profiles on board, and new international standards require better instruction and a common methodological approach in the education and training of maritime personnel in the areas of safety and communications. The main aim of this project is therefore to design and develop high quality continuing vocational training for watch-keeping officers in safety and communications, based on new communications technology.

The training will be developed on the basis of recommendations made by the International Maritime Organisation regarding basic safety courses. The first activity of the partners will be the mapping of existing training in each country. The results will provide the basis for a harmonised transnational training programme. Once it has been designed, it will be tested and evaluated. Concrete products will include a computer-based evaluation tool, and a quality assurance system for maritime communication and safety training.

Impact
The CBT evaluation tool will make it easier for schools and training centres to adapt their practice to new safety standards. The quality assurance system will be implemented in all maritime training centres and schools.
