Summary
The main aim of this project is to establish a new research center at the Jagiellonian University (JU) in Kraków (Poland). The center will conduct high quality interdisciplinary research connecting artificial intelligence (AI) with healthcare. This group will build on the groundbreaking AI research that is currently conducted at JU. They will apply this work to medical applications, and translate the results into clinical practice. The center will be primarily devoted to research excellence and innovation, but will also operate as a thought leader and an entrepreneurial hub in the medical AI space. The group will be led by an outstanding, internationally recognized physician-scientist with significant achievements in deep learning and medical image analysis. Under his leadership, Polish AI research groups, from JU and beyond, will be able to connect their foundational work with medical experts, which will bring clinicians closer to scientific developments. The ERA Chair holder will be supported by JU faculty and an Advisory Board composed of internationally renowned scientists from top universities across the world, including Harvard University, New York University, Karolinska Institute, and the University of Girona. The center will become an attractive entity and a leader in the medical AI field through research excellence, the improvement of interdisciplinary and international mobility and collaboration, and the creation of attractive courses at the JU. Activities that will lead to this goal are described in 6 Work Packages. In the long-term, work undertaken by the center’s members will have wide societal impacts, primarily through the development of next-negation clinical tools, which will lead to better patient outcomes.
