EURO IMJIN | European Literature and the “First East Asian War” of 1592-1598 (EURO-IMJIN)

Summary
This project will locate, transcribe, translate, and analyse European accounts of the East Asian War of 1592-1598 (“The Imjin War”), connecting European and East Asian research on the war and opening new horizons for researchers from both regions. The applicant is a specialist of seventeenth century European literature with four years experience teaching and researching Spanish literature at universities in China and Japan. The applicant will build upon his current skill set by receiving Asian history, language, and translation training with a unique team of specialists at the host institution (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). This will provide him with a solid foundation for his future research trajectory on the literature of East-West encounters in Asia. Ultimately, the applicant aims to use this opportunity to obtain a permanent academic appointment back in Europe, bringing his knowledge and networks from Asia.
