Summary
The aim of the CIPHR project is to establish the Center of Photonics and Computational Imaging (CPCI), a research unit within the University of Tartu (UTARTU) that will become a world leader in Computational Imaging, a sub field of photonics. We will establish this center by recruiting a leading expert in the field to serve as ERA Chair in Computational Imaging and Processing in High Resolution, who will in turn create a top-level research team capable of conducting cutting edge research that combines photonics with the computational power of computer science and optoelectronics.
Computational Imaging is a vastly interdisciplinary field; therefore, it has the potential to become one of the most important industries in the future, offering a multitude of applications in 3D imaging, remote sensing, image compression, consumer electronics, security and defense, microscopy and healthcare diagnostics. To account for interdisciplinarity of Computational Imaging, the ERA Chair will build bridges between several fields that UTARTU is already strong at: optics and spectroscopy, machine vision, remote sensing, electronics and informatics.
The ERA Chair will also establish strong links with the industrial actors, improve the quality of UTARTU's curricula and work to raise awareness about photonics and the benefits it can offer to society. As a result of ERA Chair's activities, UTARTU will achieve excellence in the field of photonics, develop an efficient system for research exploitation, improve knowledge and skills of future researchers by providing better education to them and raise UTARTU's profile among Estonian and international audiences.
