PICO | Physics for all

Summary
Throughout the past decades, cutting edge research in the frontiers of Physics (astrophysics, gravitational waves, particle physics, astroparticle physics) has provided us with major discoveries and applications and has launched impressive initiatives in the Physics of the very big and the very small. Despite the dissemination effort aiming to inform both the public and the school community about these initiatives and their impact to society, a gap exists between research and society/education which might help to spawn misconceptions about the content, context and mission of science and thus, lead citizens to fall prey to anti-intellectual attitudes and stereotypes. To this end, PhysICs fOr all - PICO - aims to support all citizens to increase their awareness of fundamental, cutting-edge physics and of the impact that discoveries in this field have on their everyday lives with a specific focus on equity, diversity, accessibility, inclusion and gender equality with targeted activities focusing especially on students. By bringing together major European research institutions in the fields of frontier Physics and Science Education as well as partners with high expertise in communication, media and marketing, PICO will forge sustained links between researchers and citizens and coordinate Researchers’ Night and Researchers at schools activities in 2024 and 2025 in 4 countries (Greece, Italy, France, Spain), aiming to engage more than 40,000 citizens and inspire more than 2,000 students in science and attract them to scientific careers.
