Scientific recommendations for the sustainable management of water in shale gas operations in Europe. Aim: Public dissemination of scientific recommendations for sustainable approaches to water management to minimize impacts from review of best practices (mainly U.S.A. and Canada), extended with analysis of available data to close identified knowledge gaps. Scope: Scientific recommendations on handling fracking fluids and backflows to minimize waste risk provides guidelines for different stakeholders in shale gas activities, and aids discussions on proper technical criteria for licenses to operate.
